Clare Pickering — The Late Bloomer

Stories matter and you, my friend, have important stories to tell!
— Clare Pickering

I discovered acting later in life than most actors normally do. I grew up in Perth, Western Australia, studied nursing and then backpacked around the world for over four years.

When I returned home from my most extraordinary travels, I moved to Sydney where I accidentally fell into acting. How? It was at a party! One of the guests was a film director and he literally changed the course of my life. Upon his recommendation, I signed up for NIDA summer classes. It was there I met and continued to study with the incredible Andrea Moor and Lee Biolos. One fateful day a friend suggested I study acting full time and that was it. After graduating from the Ensemble Acting Studios in 2000, I performed in theatre, musicals, television and film.

If you want to learn more about what I got up to, check out my acting and film credits.

Relocating to Melbourne a decade later, I soon realised the only way I was going to get a gig, was to create my own work. I wrote and starred in my first solo theatre show Doing Time With Number 5 which I toured to Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014.

With a bit of luck and support from fellow creatives, I began writing, producing and directing. What started as one short film has blossomed into multiple award winning shorts. I’ve directed actors in several theatre productions and continue to mentor and support them in their careers.

In 2020, I created my Storytelling courses to empower people to find their unique voice and share their stories with the world. My participants have gone on to create blogs, novels, and award winning one person shows and cabarets. In 2025 I directed Roy Barker’s one man show Don’t Get Carried Away, which was one of the last shows at The Butterfly Club before it closed its doors. Roy performed his show at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2026. How incredible is that!

My mission in life is to give a voice to those who don’t have one. This is why I’m so excited to announce that in June 2026, we’re launching a new short film festival — LateBloomersFest. This festival is giving a voice and visibility to creatives, cast and crew over the age of 50. Our red carpet event will be held in December. Don’t miss it!

The world needs storytellers. So join me and let’s create some magic together!
